Essential Oils

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and flavor, or “essence,” of their source. Depending on the type, quality, and purity, essential oils can be used topically, inhaled, and taken internally to help with a variety of concerns. The following is a common list of essential oils Beneventi Botanicals uses for products with a link to the source for product information:

Grass-Fed Beef Tallow

What is tallow?

Tallow is a type of cleaned and purified fat. Fats, along with proteins, are essential building blocks for every cell membrane, including the skin. They provide energy, help absorb minerals, and carry a wealth of vitamins. Tallow is the result of a delicate and tedious process of rendering animal suet. Suet is a nutrient-dense fat surrounding the organs of some ruminant animals, most notably their kidney.

Beneventi Botanicals uses a locally grown and grass-fed source for our tallow because it’s free from synthetic growth hormones, high in essential vitamins, and produces high quality, nutrient-rich fat that is not found in grain-fed, factory-farmed cattle.

Reasons to use tallow on your skin:

  • Healthy fats lead to healthy skin. Tallow contains the same fats or lipids found in healthy, supple human skin. Lipids are found in abundance in the membrane of every cell in our bodies. They are responsible for the moisture in and out of our cells. Lipids are beneficial because they create a protective, yet permeable barrier that prevents infection, maintains moisture, flexibility and cell. Tallow is believed to prevent dryness at the cellular level without suffocating the skin's barrier like petroleum-based lotions do.

  • Promotes younger looking skin. Beef tallow, rendered from grass-fed cattle, is loaded with vitamins A, D & K and antioxidants. One of which is vitamin E, known to promote rejuvenation of the skin by fighting free radicals that can cause wrinkles.

  • Creates balance between tallow and sebum. Tallow and sebum (the oil in our skin) share many of the same lipids or fats in similar concentrations. Some believe that it is this similarity that allows tallow to absorb deep within the layers of the skin.

  • Deep and effective moisturizer. Tallow is an intense moisturizer that assists in retaining the skin's natural moisture. It replenishes the building blocks of our skin that decrease with age. It’s non-greasy, won’t clog your pores, is long-lasting and 100% natural. It prevents dryness all day and only needs to be applied once.

Hydrosol (Floral Water)

My hydrosols are steam distilled from organically raised botanicals and have no chemicals, preservatives, or added ingredients. You may hear people say that hydrosols are considered a bi-product created while making essential oils. However, the water itself contains the beneficial essence of the botanicals and is far too valuable to be considered a bi-product in my opinion. During steam distillation, the plant matter is heated to create steam. The steam is then cooled and separated into oil and water, making it possible to extract the oil from the steam. The leftover steam is hydrosol, which contains trace amounts of essential oils. Though hydrosols do not replace essential oils, they contain a diluted amount of the same essence which makes them safe to use for most people, infants, and even pets. They can be used directly on the skin and taken internally.

I sell my hydrosols in their pure form to use as toners, rinses, cooling sprays, and tonics. I also use my own hydrosol in my skincare recipes anywhere that water is specified. This gives my products the added benefits of the specific distilled botanicals.

Non-Nano Zinc Oxide

Non-nano zinc oxide is a natural mineral that is great for salves, creams, lotions and ointments. The particles are non-nano, meaning they are too large to be absorbed by the skin, which is thought to be safer than nano zinc oxide particles. The mineral sits on top of your skin, rather than soaking in. It protects you from the sun by scattering, absorbing, and reflecting the sun's rays. It is safe for use by all ages.
